what's up with all these changes?
since the creation of the discography, a ton has changed in the way we browse the internet. the discography was purely html-based up until 2007 or so when i decided it was time to put everything into a database. the process is quite involved considering all the information that needs to be dealt with. over the past couple years the database and site itself has undergone some design changes. most of them were to allow for better display of releases on the site and some were for future projects such as the owner's list, articles and bootleg sections.
with that being said, i am quite pleased with how the current layout and design work. there is still a lot of work to be done with the database, but the layout you see on the screen now probably won't change for a long time to come.
why is the complete discography still incomplete?
such a nagging question that seems to just keep popping up randomly. i could make up every excuse in the world as to why the database isn't complete yet, but it basically comes down to the fact that i do not get paid for doing any of this, in fact, i spend my own money to keep this place running. so unfortunately, the discography ranks close to the bottom on priority for current projects...those which i actually get paid for take priority as that's what i'm in business to do!
however, i will never abandon the discography and if the opportunity ever presented itself where i could have a timeframe to complete and get paid for it, it could probably be finished (at least with the offical releases) within a month or two. keep in mind, i'm not even halfway through the official releases and there are already 250 releases in the database. couple that with hundreds more bootleg releases as well as interviews and articles...you get the idea of just how much information there really is to be dealt with!
so i can just say...be patient and use the nincollector site for unlisted releases and keep sending your new releases my way! and for those of you wondering about the watermarks on a lot of the scans. many people don't realize that at one time, one person (the nincollector) owned all of the watermarked images related to each release and was willing to hand over everything for use in the discography. i am in the process of collecting high quality scans to replace them.
what information can i find here?
you can find information regarding:
- offical releases (halos)
- recordings by trent before nin
- recordings of work by trent outside of nin
- any soundtrack or compilation trent has worked on
- any videos
- band members (past and present)
- covers of nin songs
- bootleg recordings
- magazine articles / newspaper clippings
what's the deal with bootlegs?
a bootleg is an unofficial recording not released by the band (nin) itself (mainly because they are not manufactured in north america). these may be any live recordings that exist on the market today or are demo recordings. these are different from official nin recordings in that they do not bear a "halo number" . halo numbers are trent's method of labeling his stuff. since this whole internet thing came around, the good old days of collecting bootleg recordings on silver-pressed cd's are long gone, however a database will be created for all previous bootlegs as well as give info on some newer one's since the fragility tour.
examples of bootlegs that get asked about a lot are purest feeling, demos and remixes, and the three version of rusty nails and suck halo 00. keep in mind that these are not official releases and information regarding them can be found elsewhere. especially note halo 00: while it bears a halo number, it is not an official release, but a bootleg containing supernaut and the live version of suck.
how do i submit something to the discography?
i am working on creating a user-friendly way to submit your unlisted releases including images and all that good stuff to the database.
who maintains all of this?
jay debard has been maintaining the site since 1998. send an e-mail to debard at gmail dot com if you have questions/comments/concerns! for info on previous webmasters, please read the disclaimer.
